Priyanka dazzles Toronto at ‘What’s Your Rashee’ premiere

Bollywood beauty Priyanka Chopra dazzled the Toronto audience as Ashutosh Gowariker's "What's Your Rashee?" brought the curtains down on the last day of the 34th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) here.

Gowariker, Priyanka and actor Hurman Baweja were given the ceremonial red carpet reception at the city's Roy Thomson Hall where the film premiered Saturday. And festival co-director Cameron Bailey was on hand to welcome the trio.

Unlike 2001, Gowariker said, Saturday was a special day for him as it was the first time his film was being premiered at one of the world's top film festivals.

Waving to the crowd in the theatre hall, Priyanka said she was thrilled to be at the Toronto film festival for the first time. She asked the audiences to be forgiving as it was her first film premiere at a major international festival.

In the packed hall, the audience enjoyed every moment as the over three-hour-long film unfolded on the big screen. Shortlisting 165 girls who respond to their matrimonial ad to just 12 - each of one sun sign - Yogesh and his family start meeting each girl, starting with the Aries sun sign.

Twelve songs - one for each sun sign - keep the plot afloat as Priyanka changes chameleon-like from the role of one girl to the other.

"What's Your Rashee?" was the second Bollywood film to be premiered this year at the festival after "Dil Bole Hadippa", which stars Rani Mukerji and Shahid Kapoor.

But many other India-specific films were also screened at the film festival this year.

Katrina Kaif working hard to Improve her Hindi Pronunciations

Katrina Kaif is working very hard on her dialogue delivery for Prakash Jha’s movie, Rajniti where she plays a politician (reportedly inspired by Sonia Gandhi).

She has always had a heavy accent when she spoke in Hindi, but she’s trying to improve her pronunciations. Whenever she has free time at home, she practices her lines so that she doesn’t go wrong during the dubbing of the film.

She wants her acting skills to be considered in the film and if possible, even win a few awards.

Smilie Suri is to contest in a dance reality show in the forthcoming comedy film Down Town. She plays a small town girl who comes to Mumbai to take part in the show.

Kalyug girl will soon contest in a dance reality show in the film Down Town. Smilie is head on heels in love with her new-look in the film.

She is playing a small town girl Anushka in Down Town. “She is a small towner who comes down to Mumbai to contest in a dance reality show. It’s a comedy film that throws light on the changing lives of contestants, and the people around them after the reality show,” she briefs about the film.

Divya Dutta buys first Gully Cricket Team

After the craze for owning a Twenty 20 team, now the game's T-10 format, called Gully Cricket, has started attracting celebrities.

Actress Divya bought the Ludhiana Gully Cricket team Saturday for season two that will kick-start Sep 19 and end in a grand finale at Kanpur Nov 20, a spokesperson said here Sunday.

It will be played amongst 896 players from 64 teams in Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Amritsar, Panchkula, Varanasi, Gorakhpur, Ballia, Patna, Gwalior, Lucknow, Kanpur, Allahabad, Surat, Nashik, Latur and Daman and will be telecast live on DD Sports Channel.

Divya, who is from Ludhiana, will patronise the team and be responsible for marketing and promoting it nationally. She will also be involved in activities like grooming the players, cheering them and sponsorships for the team.

Film actor Riteish Deshmukh is the brand ambassador of the event, the first season of which was completed in January-February 2009.

Priyamani, another Bangalore-based girl ready to conquer Bollywood

After Deepika Padukone and Anushka Sharma, another actress from Bangalore city is all set to conquer the Hindi film industry. Priyamani will make her Bollywood debut with Mani Ratnam's "Ravan".
Priyamani modelled for several sari ads before she was signed for the Tamil film "Paruthiveeran", which won her the best actress National Award.

Deepika was the first to make headway in Bollywood with her dream debut in "Om Shanti Om" opposite Shah Rukh Khan. The film broke box-office records and the young actress hugely benefited from its success -- she landed roles in big banner projects like "Bachna Ae Haseeno", "Chandni Chowk To China" and "Love Aaj Kal".

After that Yash Raj Films introduced Anushka in their light romantic drama "Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi". Once again this newcomer was paired with Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan and she carved a niche for herself in the role of a girl-next-door. After that she has been signed for two more Yash Raj projects.

Incidentally, another Bangalore-based girl Anushka Shetty, who is ruling the roost in the Telugu film industry, is ready to try her luck in Hindi films as her Telugu hit "Arundathi" is being dubbed in Hindi.

Nandita Das new head of Children’s Film Society

Actress-director Nandita Das has been appointed the new chairperson of the Children’s Films Society of India (CFSI).
“The tenure of her appointment … shall be for a period of three years or until further orders, whichever is earlier,” read an official statement.

Earlier, the post was held by actress-social activist Nafisa Ali. It fell vacant when she resigned to contest the Lok Sabha election from Lucknow on Samajwadi Party ticket this year.

Nandita, who is best known for her performances in Deepa Mehta’s “Fire and “Earth”, is the daughter of celebrated Indian painter Jatin Das.

The 39-year-old recently donned the directors’s hat for “Firaaq”.

Katrina will participate Independence Day carnival in US

Katrina Kaif who is currently enjoying her month long vacation in Italy with her family will travel to the USA in August to celebrate Independence day, with the US based Indians and take part in the carnival.

A lot of B-Town bigwigs may be heading to the USA with Katrina for Independence Day festivities. Shah Rukh Khan, Bipasha Basu, Kareena Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan and other actors will be join with Katrina in the Chicago Carnival.

Shruti Haasan will pay tribute to Michael Jackson

As a tribute to the late pop star, a group of young singers along with Shruti Haasan will be performing live in Chennai. A source said, “Shruti will be performing on three Michael Jackson numbers. However, they are still to zero in on the songs. Young talents like Benny Dayal and Krish will also be performing.”

The show will be held at the Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai. Many performers and celebrities are expected while the details of which are being finalised.

However, it’s also confirmed that Shruti’s father Kamal Haasan along with AR Rahman, Shankar Mahadevan and others shall attend the extravaganza! While news is abuzz that several legends from the music industry are likely to be present at the event!

Court allows release of ‘Short Kut’

Delhi High Court Thursday allowed Bollywood actor and producer Anil Kapoor to release his film “Short Kut” after he agreed to pay Rs.35 lakh to another producer B.S. Bhullar, who claimed to have copyright over the title of the movie.

The movie, starring Akshay Khanna, Arshad Warsi and Amrita Rao, is scheduled to be released July 10 2009.

Bhullar claimed that he had forwarded his film’s script to Anil Kapoor and offered him a key role, but Kapoor had turned down the offer.

Aishwarya gets Karate training for Endhiran Movie

After having learnt sword fights for her English movie The Last Legion, Aishwarya has been training herself in Karate for Endhiran. A noted stunt master Ramesh who has been running a Japan Shito-Ryu karate school in the South for over 30 years, which is affiliated to the World Karate Federation is training the actress for the movie. Ramesh is teaching Aishwarya the basics of Karate for now. In the movie Aishwarya Rai and the other girls in the film will be learning Karate from her hero. Rajnikant is already trained in Karate. Some interesting scenes were shot recently in the VIT University in Chennai.

Aishwarya Rai has always been a quick learner. Even during the making of the The Last Legion Aishwary Rai had trained herself in the sword fight. She took her skills forward in Ashutosh Gowarikar’s Jodhaa Akbar. Her trainers have always been enamoured by her quick learning skills. Apparently Ramesh was also charmed that the actress was able to repeat the karate movements easily.

Shilpa and Katrina to perform at the closing ceremony of IPL

Undeterred by her team, Rajasthan Royals, not being able retain their championship status, Shilpa Shetty revealed her true sportsman spirit as she joins American Rand B sensation Akon singing Smack That at the closing ceremony of IPL at the Wanderer in Johannesburg Sunday night.

Joining at event will also be the beautiful and the gorgeous Katirna Kaif dancing on Oscar winner AR Rahman’s Jai Ho with Indian and South African dance troupes led by Shamiak Davar.

Aishwarya sizzles on Cannes Film Festival

Her first appearance at the Cannes Film Festival in 2002 was nothing short of a fashion disaster. Seven years later, Bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai`s walk of poise and elan at the ongoing French festival has left the Indian fashion fraternity raving.

Her choice of an elegant white off-shoulder Roberto Cavalli train gown teamed with a neatly tied bun and simple pearl drop earrings besides a Swarovski box clutch and red peep-toes was a sureshot hit. This year she was at the Cannes as an activist for social and humanitarian causes by lending her name to the International Tribunes Cinema Verite. The Bollywood diva addressed a press conference along with Queen Noor of Jordan Thursday to announce the third edition of the event that will take place later this year in Geneva (Oct 6 to 8) and Paris (Oct 9-10).

Cinema Verite is a special event dedicated to films and social actions that promote human rights and the eight Millennium Development Goals adopted by the UN.

While there have been persistent Internet rumours that the ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ star would be the face of Estee Lauder, Pinto has said that she is excited to be the face of L’Oreal.

“I am very moved to be joining the great L’Oreal Paris family and all these personalities: a family I am now proud to be a part of,” People quoted Freida as saying in a statement.
